Mackall family papers, 1835-1930.

The papers in this collection relate to William Whann Mackall, his son, William Whann Mackall, and a kinsman, Leonard Leopold Mackall. They consist of the typed manuscript of a biography of W.W. Mackall (1817-1891) by his son: A Son's Recollections of His Father (E.P. Dutton, ca. 1930); a biographical sketch of L.L. Mackall; poetry by W.W. Mackall (1817-1891); two translations of a German poem, The Minstrel's Curse , and a copy of a letter from W.W. Mackall (1817-1891) to his father regarding charges against him and his trial while a West Point cadet.

William Whann Mackall was born in Washington, D.C., on January 17, 1817. He graduated from West Point in 1837 and served with the U.S. Army in the Seminole and Mexican-American Wars. He was made Assistant Adjutant-General with the rank of Major in 1853, but resigned in 1861 and joined the Confederate Army. Mackall served with Simon Buckner and P.G.T.
